New department head announced at Nottingham law firm

Nottingham law firm Nelsons has announced a new head of department for its city-based court of protection team.

Craig Staten-Spencer was promoted to the role of legal director in December 2020 and has now been appointed head of the firm’s court of protection team in Nottingham.

He joined Nelsons in 2011 after moving from a career in banking to fulfil his dream of working in the legal industry.

Richard Grosberg, who has led the team for the past ten years, is reducing his hours over the next 12 months in preparation for retirement after 36 years with the firm.

Staten-Spencer said: “I’m incredibly excited to be taking the reins of such a fantastic team, after being heavily involved in its day-to-day operations with Richard and seeing it develop in recent years. We now represent a wide range of clients across the entirety of the East Midlands and specialise in several areas, including advising clients on any matters associated with the Court of Protection – the specialist court for issues relating to people who lack mental capacity to make their own decisions – along with trust and charity administration work.

“As a team, our main priority is to ensure that we empower our clients and allow them the opportunity to live the best life they possibly can. I look forward to continuing to build on this momentum and expanding the team’s reach even further in the years to come.”

Grosberg said: “Craig has been an invaluable support for a number of years now and, with a decade’s experience under his belt, I couldn’t be more delighted to see him assume his new role. The next year is going to be an incredibly exciting one for the department as it continues to expand both its services and the team as well, so I can’t wait to see what’s next for them as they flourish underneath Craig’s leadership.”

Jane Sutherland, head of Nelsons’ private client teams, who is relocating to the Nottingham office after working in Leicester for the past 20 years, said: “Our Court of Protection department has gone from strength to strength over the past few years and that’s down to the fantastic leadership provided by both Richard and Craig.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to work closely with Craig as he settles into his new role and seeing him continue to build on the momentum that’s already been established within the team.”
