Pet supplies business changes hands as owner retires

A popular Allestree pet supplies business has changed hands after its founder announced plans to retire after 26 years.

Rob and Helen Tomlinson will take over Allestree Pet Supplies from Ken Whieldon, who set up the business at the Park Farm Shopping Centre in 1995.

“I’ve made so many happy memories here,” says Whieldon, “which is why it’s so important that I’m handing over the shop to like-minded, friendly people who have a passion for animals.”

Together with her husband Rob, Helen Tomlinson has worked at Supapet based in Derby’s Market Hall since 2001 – they closed the stall last month.

“Following the pandemic and the changes to the Market Hall, we felt it was the right time to move on,” said Rob.

“Like many local businesses, we’ve had to adapt to the challenges of the pandemic. We’ve seen a growing number of customers from both Derby and Nottingham choosing to have their pet supplies delivered by us.”

Helen is looking forward to the buzz of serving customers in the shop again. “It’s been great to be out and about and it’s clear our customers have appreciated the flexibility and convenience of having their pet supplies delivered to their front door. It’s been really popular, which is why we’re continuing to offer a free local delivery service for customers in Derby and Nottingham.

“However, with the restrictions lifting, I’m really looking forward to welcoming customers back at our shop in Allestree. Ken’s built a fantastic reputation and we know that he is much-loved by the community. We are looking forward to making sure that his passion for quality pet products and customer service continues.”
