Housing plans for HMRC’s city centre home

Saxon House, Leicester

The home of HMRC in Leicester could be converted into 100 flats if plans are approved.

HMRC is due to exit Saxon House on Causeway Lane in June next year as part of the long-running national plans to rationalise its estate and create regional hubs.

The city centre building, which is next to John Lewis, was built in 1992 on the site of Leicester’s first maternity hospital.

The 74,500 sq ft office block’s owner, Mapeley STEPS, is also looking to sell the building off a guide price of £6.5m.

The consultation period has now begun on the plans, after details of the application were published by Leicester City Council.

A previous application submitted in 2018, to convert the building into 122 flats, required the development to be completed by January 2022.

The latest plans would see the six-storey building converted into 21 studio, 49 one-bed, and 30 two-bed apartments. The scheme would have 28 car parking spaces, although the previous approval on the site also required the promotion of active travel schemes.
