£750,000 town centre regeneration programme completed
A £750,000 regeneration scheme in Burton’s High Street has been completed.
The funding came from the Government’s Stronger Towns programme and is additional to the £23m already agreed.
Work included resurfacing of the road between Worthington Way and New Street and installing new footway paving using the same materials as the Station Street improvements. High Street is now fully open after been closed for the duration of the works.
In addition to the improvement works, a separate scheme took place in coordination to create a bus gate on High Street. This new traffic order means that from today (Monday August 2) only buses and cyclists will be able to enter High Street between its junction with Manor Croft and New Street and its junction with Worthington Way. Taxis and delivery vehicles can access High Street from 4pm to 10am. The council says the scheme will improve safety for pedestrian and cyclists.
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said: “It is fantastic that our continued regenerative work with East Staffordshire Borough Council is bringing such successful results; with the High Street improvements following those in Station Street.
“The project team has managed to continue working on safely through the pandemic period to get the job done.
“Revitalising our town centres is more important now than ever. We look forward continuing to contribute to maintaining Burton town centre’s vibrancy in the future.”
Deputy leader for regeneration and planning policy at East Staffordshire Borough Council George Allen said: “The completion of the public realm and transport improvements on the High Street, following the work on Station Street, is another significant step in the radical transformation of the town centre in Burton. I look forward to working closely with Staffordshire County Council and other key partners over the coming years in further improving our town centres.”
Burton was one of 100 towns to be selected for up to £25m from the Towns Fund to support it ongoing regeneration and future economic growth.
