A major fire broke out at a scrap metal site in Nottingham on Saturday night.

More than 100 firefighters attended the blaze and worked on the Sims Metal site overnight to limit the blaze.

Residents were told to keep windows closed because of the huge amount of smoke from the fire at Lenton Industrial Estate.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service group manager Matt Reavill said the situation was “stabilised” by Sunday afternoon although firefighters were still dealing with “hot spots over a large area”.

He said: “The main challenge now is dealing with multiple fires, and the focus of operations now is using on-site plant machinery to break down some of the scrap piles, spread it out, and allow us to get water on.

“Our main priority now is to get all of these businesses up and running tomorrow [Monday].”

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
