Planning bosses give thumbs up to £100m city centre scheme

How the tower would've looked

A major Nottingham city centre scheme could be approved next week, after planning chiefs from Nottingham City Council recommended that it be voted through.

The plans, on Queens Road, include a purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) building with 406 beds, and two buildings containing a total of 238 Build to Rent (BTR) apartments – one of which would reach 22 storeys in height.

In May the green light to knock down four commercial buildings on the site has been given the green light. This has now been completed.

Developer MRP put forward plans in 2019 for the site at the top of Queens Road in Nottingham city centre that would bring forward 406 student beds and 245 residential units across two buildings.

Later that year, national planning and development consultancy Lichfields was appointed by the developer to deliver the planning consent, and the parties held a public consultation on the proposals.

Lichfields planning director Ian Kettlewell said: “This development displays investor confidence in Nottingham and plays a key part in the regeneration of the Canal Quarter.”

Nottingham City Council’s planning committee will vote on the scheme next Wednesday (October 19).

Approval could include Section 106 payments of £400,000 – with potential for more cash that would go towards affordable housing, education, open space/public realm and local employment and training.

Consarc is the architect on the scheme.
