Logistics firm bucks industry recruitment trend

Northampton-based logistics business XPO has achieved a major recruitment milestone this year despite a widely publicised shortage of drivers across the industry.

The freight transportation provider has surpassed its target of hiring at least 1,000 drivers in the UK and Ireland in 2022 and says it will continue to add to its ranks before the year is out.

The company is on track to onboard over 20% more drivers this year than it did in 2021, aligning with its strategic goal of expanding its driver base without the need to employ subcontract drivers.

XPO says it has also continued to invest in information technology, distribution operations, administration, management and sales and service roles this year.

Lynn Brown, human resources director – UK and Ireland at XPO, said: “It is critical that we support our drivers by understanding their needs. We offer competitive salary and benefits packages, hold forums to encourage driver feedback, and provide upskill training, all of which position XPO as an employer of choice in our sector.

“Our driver boot camps and apprenticeship scheme are examples of channels for driver development that leverage our scale. Individuals who have an interest in becoming licensed HGV drivers can train with us while they work in other roles. These schemes bolster our transport capacity available to customers while helping employees pursue a new career.”
