Top 10 stories of 2022: Number 2 – Derby County suitor sacked by tech firm

Chris Kirchner

Over the past week, we’ve been taking a look back at our most popular stories of 2022.

Our second best-read story of the year concerns an entrepreneur who was once first in line to buy Derby County out of administration.

Chris Kirchner was named as the Rams’ preferred bidder in April, but the deal collapsed in June after he withdrew his offer and walked away, leaving the path clear for local property developer David Clowes to rescue the stricken football club.

However, it was what happened next that most excited our readers.

At the beginning of August, the controversial Kirchner was sacked as CEO and chairman of logistics technology provider Slync.io and replaced by Timothy F Keyhoe, Slync’s former chief of staff and a retired US Army colonel, who was named interim president of the firm.

Kirchner, who co-founded Slync in 2017, had become a divisive figure at the company after he allegedly failed to pay staff for months at a time. He also reportedly suspended a number of current and former employees for blowing the whistle on the Dallas-based tech firm’s failure to pay them.

He was placed on gardening leave on July 25.
