Milestone for Becketwell as launch date set for landmark apartment scheme

The Condor

The £200m Becketwell regeneration scheme in Derby city centre has taken another step closer to completion after Grainger plc announced the launch of Derby’s first ever build-to-rent apartment building.

The Condor – named after the famous Rolls-Royce engine – is situated on the former Debenhams site on Victoria Street. It comprises 259 apartments, ground floor amenity space, a shared resident’s lounge, co-working space and a rooftop terrace.

It will open next month operated by Grainger, one of the largest residential property businesses in the UK. The company also owns the building.

The £37m, eleven-storey scheme was developed by St James Securities and built by main contractor GMI Construction Group.

Helen Gordon, chief executive at Grainger said: “The Condor is a great new addition to our build-to-rent portfolio, particularly with it being our first development in Derby.

“The Condor offers a new style of renting in the city, and we look forward to showcasing the benefits of professionally managed, Build to Rent homes as our residents settle into The Condor this summer.”

Paul Morris, director of St James Securities, added: “More than five years since we first visited this much neglected site, we are delighted to see The Condor become fully operational in the first phase of this landmark development, together with the new Springwell public square.

“We have worked very closely with Grainger plc throughout the project and are thrilled to have such a well-respected company be our first fund and operator in the scheme.

“The Condor will allow hundreds of people to live in high-quality homes in the heart of the city and has revitalised an area which has been challenged for many years.”
