Plans revealed for almost 1,300-bed student scheme in Nottingham city centre

Plans for two huge student accommodation towers in Nottingham city centre have been revealed.

Code Students (Nottingham) wants to build the 19- and 27-storey scheme on land surrounded by Glasshouse Street and Cairns Street on the northern edge of the city centre.

The building could house almost 1,300 students once built and will include retail and cafe space on the ground floor.

The scheme is being designed by Staniforth Architects.

A planning statement reads: “It is anticipated that this development will play an important role by providing much needed student bed spaces to the rapidly growing Universities within the vicinity of the site. In turn, this will reduce the reliance on private rented accommodation, often in traditional terrace houses more suited to families, within the suburbs of Nottingham and help provide high quality accommodation that is both convenient and sustainable.”

The site has long been identified as a suitable location for a tall building by Nottingham City Council, but the Code Students scheme has already come up against significant opposition from the Nottingham Civic Society (NCS).

In an email to the city council, the Civic Society, which has consistently been opposed to new, tall buildings in Nottingham, said: “NCS is concerned about this proposal because of its potential adverse impact not only upon the historic environment in the vicinity of the application site (listed buildings, conservation areas and Nottingham Local List buildings), but because over-development on a single site could deprive others areas of potential investment and regeneration to the detriment of the city
as a whole.”
