Derbyshire brewery’s glass half empty as administrators standby

A Derbyshire craft beer brewery is facing an uncertain future, TheBusinessDesk.com understands.

Buxton Brewery Company has posted a notice of intention to appoint administrators, via Primas Law. The move will protect the brewer and pubco from creditor action for a period of around ten days.

Buxton Brewery was established in 2009 and, according to its website, now produces upwards of 30 beers from a 7,000 sq ft base on Staden Lane in the Peak District town.

Buxton Brewery runs two pubs; the Tap House and Cellar in Buxton and the Treacle Tap in Macclesfield, which closed three weeks ago.

Records filed at Companies House in the last two weeks show that Denis Johnstone and Deborah Quinn have stepped down from their director roles.

The firm’s last available accounts, which were unaudited, shows the firm made a loss of £215,000 for the 12 months to the end of March 2023, against a profit of £185,000 a year earlier. During the period, Buxton Brewery employed 26 people.

The brewery’s core beers include IPA Axe Edge and the Gate Keeper porter.

Investec Capital Solutions holds an outstanding charge over the company.
