Green light for student scheme on Nottingham gateway site

How the scheme will look

Plans for new a new student accommodation scheme on one of Nottingham’s busiest junctions was given the go-ahead at the city council’s planning committee meeting on Wednesday afternoon (July 17)

James Egan submitted plans for a purpose built student accommodation scheme on the corner of Pemberton Street and Lower Canal Street – on land that has been used as a car park for almost 20 years – and on the edge of the Lace Market.

The plans outline a building – called Finley House – incorporating 81 student bedrooms, made up of 25 studios and 56 cluster flats and designed by Arc Design Studio with planning led by GraceMachin Planning & Property.

A planning statement reads: “A new scheme which is of high quality will be attractive to prospective students, but also beneficial for the health and well-being of its occupants.

“The location is perfectly positioned for student housing due to its close proximity to Nottingham Trent University and the new University of Nottingham campus on the former HMRC site. It will also help to revitalise the local area by drawing interest further down Canal Street, and into the city centre.”

The scheme will sit next to the Hylyfe building.

The three- and four-storey development facing Canal Street will fall back to three floors as it continues around onto Pemberton Street.
