Plans in to turn former nuclear bunker into mixed-use scheme

Nottingham War Rooms

A Nottingham bunker built to survive a nuclear attack could be turned into and new creative hub and housing, under new plans.

How the scheme would look

Property developer Hamilton Russell Homes, which bought the War Rooms and the land around it in 2022, is transform the 1950s command centre on Chalfont Drive in Beechdale, Nottingham, into 104 affordable homes, along with a new hub aimed at education and learning – as well as a space for the Base 51 charity.

The move follows a public consultation last year to redeveloper the bunker, known locally as “The Kremlin”.

A planning document put together by architect CPMG said: “The project is aspirational in its nature and will help to raise perceptions of the site’s history. The brief for the project emphasises respect for the historic value of the building, quality of design and materials, and sustainability, with the aim of creating a focal amenity for the resident community and a multi-functional facility that will attract visitors and create jobs, thus providing a boost to the local economy.”

Built in the 1950s to withstand all but a direct hit from a nuclear bomb, the War Rooms were Decommissioned in 1965, but the Grade II listed building has remained relatively untouched, holding a glimpse into what life would have been like for those who would have worked and lived in the war rooms if the need arose.

A statement from Base 51 said: “The trustees of Base 51 fully support the re-development of the War Rooms site –it’s an extraordinary opportunity that brings together a forgotten part of the Cold War era into something fit-for-purpose for the 21st Century: providing affordable homes, a safe space for those who need it most and an area for bringing communities and local businesses together.”

Nottinghamshire City Council’s planning bosses will consider the application over coming weeks.
