Plans for 247-bed student scheme given green light

Plans for a major student accommodation scheme in Nottingham city centre have been given the green light by the council’s planning committee.
PMI Developments and Harcourt Land and Development have been given the go-ahead to build a three-, five-, six- and nine-storey scheme on the site of a warehouse on Glasshouse Street in the Eastside area of Nottingham, behind the Victoria Shopping Centre.
The site currently includes a single storey industrial building, used recently for the sale of tyres and motor-related goods.
The scheme will provide up to 247 student accommodation units in a combination of 37 cluster flats providing 197 bed spaces and 50 individual studio flats.
The plans have been significantly changed since the application was first submitted. Originally it was proposed that the development would comprise of blocks varying in height from ground floor plus five storeys to lower ground floor, and ground floor plus 16 storeys. The scheme originally proposed 401 student beds, provided within 57 cluster flats (361 beds in total) and 40 studios.
Nottingham Civic Society objected to the original scheme, because its height and bulk would “harm the setting of an adjacent listed building2 and would “interrupt and thereby damage key views identified in adopted and emerging guidance”.
Only one councillor on the planning committee, councillor Kevin Clarke, who represents the Clifton East ward, voted against the scheme.
The project is being designed by CPMG.
