Around 70.6% of businesses surveyed in March 2026 said they expected to raise prices within the next three months to protect margins, while companies in “critical” financial distress rose 44% year-on-year in late 2025.

More than 82% also reported higher operating costs over the past year, driven by inflation across wages, energy, logistics and supply chains.

The impact is now showing up in spending data. Barclays, which processes a significant share of UK card transactions, reported a 0.1% year-on-year fall in consumer spending, the first decline since 2024.

Non-essential categories weakened further, with travel down 5.7% and airline spending falling 8.3%, while eating out flatlined.

That caution is being reinforced by broader uncertainty in the global backdrop. Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, said: “The Middle East conflict continues to stoke consumer anxiety around inflation and the cost of living. Amid a volatile geopolitical situation, households are expecting to see their pay packets squeezed by rising petrol, domestic energy, and food prices. Expected retail spending rose, but this was driven entirely by grocery spend, with most consumers expecting to rein in spending in other areas.

“The longer volatility drags on, the more uncertainty it creates in the economy. Businesses are battered by higher energy costs while also grappling with the growing burden of domestic policy pressures. From new packaging taxes to incoming employment and health regulations, the government has levers it can pull to limit the inflationary fallout. Taking early, decisive action would help shield consumers from a spike in the cost of living they simply can’t afford.”

That backdrop has been particularly visible this week in the sportswear sector, where JD Sports Fashion – long known as the “King of Trainers” – has been in the news after warning that trading conditions remain under pressure.

The retailer cut its profit guidance to £750m-£850m, down from £852m, after reporting a 2.3% fall in like-for-like sales in the first quarter to 25 April. UK sales also declined 3.9% to £3.1bn over the year, reflecting weaker demand in footwear and lifestyle sportswear.

For JD, the issue is that trainers – once a dependable growth engine – are increasingly being treated as a discretionary purchase rather than an everyday buy. Consumers are delaying upgrades, trading down or becoming more selective, particularly in higher-priced branded ranges.

The group also warned that geopolitical uncertainty, including conflict in the Middle East, could feed through into higher energy and fuel costs, further squeezing household budgets.

Linda Ellett, UK head of consumer, retail & leisure at KPMG said: “It was a disappointing April for the retail sector, even factoring in an earlier Easter, shifting some spending into March. Bar marginal growth for beauty, health and jewellery, retail sales fell across all other categories.

“Consumer confidence has been further dampened by rising prices due to the Iran conflict, with consumers cautious about potential ongoing effects. As a result, the retail sector is facing a challenging start to spring/summer, but there is hope that holiday demand and the World Cup still manage to unlock spending in the weeks and months ahead.”

JD’s outlook is also shaped by its reliance on Nike, which accounts for around 40-45% of sales, at a time when the brand is navigating a turnaround while facing stronger competition from newer performance labels. That has added further variability to product demand across key ranges.

Chief executive Régis Schultz has also warned that rising employment costs are affecting hiring decisions for younger workers, arguing that weaker youth employment could ultimately feed through into lower spending among JD’s core customer base.

More broadly, JD’s situation reflects a wider theme: even category leaders are no longer insulated from consumer caution.

Across the UK high street, 2026 has already seen a steady stream of closures and restructures as businesses adapt to weaker demand and higher costs. Retailers including Claire’s, Poundland, River Island and Quiz have all announced store closures either this year or last as they cut back physical footprints.

In hospitality, The Revel Collective – formerly Revolution Bars Group and owner of Revolution, Revolucion de Cuba and Peach Pubs – entered administration in January 2026. This led to the closure of 21 venues, including 14 Revolution bars, six Revolucion de Cuba sites and one Peach Pub, alongside 591 job losses.

TGI Fridays UK has also undergone administration-related restructuring, with further site closures as operators continue to battle rising costs and subdued discretionary spending.

Pressure is also spreading into financial services, where Lloyds Banking Group and NatWest Group are continuing to reduce branch networks as customer behaviour shifts online and cost bases are trimmed.

Elsewhere, fashion and department store retail remain under strain, with Selfridges & Co recording a fifth consecutive year of declining sales, Fenwick closing its Bond Street flagship, and Urban Outfitters preparing additional closures through 2026.

Across beauty and lifestyle retail, weaker demand is also driving consolidation, with several niche brands scaling back operations amid margin pressure.

Across sectors, the pattern is increasingly consistent: costs remain elevated, consumers are more cautious, and growth is harder to sustain.

Taken together, the picture for large consumer-facing businesses is increasingly consistent: spending has not disappeared, but it has tightened, slowed and become more selective.

For brands across retail, hospitality and leisure, the challenge in 2026 is no longer just growth – it is adapting to a market where every pound is being weighed more carefully than before.

2026 is shaping up as a real
