Dr Paul Widdop, a football researcher, describes this broader shift by saying that modern football has moved towards what he calls a \u201cSoccer as a Service\u201d model, where the historic, local identity of clubs is increasingly replaced by global consumerism.<\/p>\n
He argues that \u201cfootball clubs are no longer viewed primarily as community assets or cultural institutions, but rather as commercial entertainment platforms and global media assets.\u201d In this model, value is increasingly driven by broadcasting, sponsorship and digital content rather than local matchday culture.<\/p>\n
He also notes how the fanbase has changed, saying that \u201cthe modernisation of the sport has attracted a new demographic of young, digitally connected fans, often in places like China, India, and the Middle East, who consume content globally rather than participating in the local stadium culture.\u201d<\/p>\n
But he warns that \u201cthis globalised model threatens the historic, localised legacy of the sport, disconnecting traditional fans from the \u2018sense of place\u2019 and community that historically anchored clubs to their towns and cities.\u201d<\/p>\n
These shifts help explain why modern football now feels increasingly structured like a global industry. Ownership groups, regulatory bodies and commercial partners all play a role in shaping how clubs operate, invest and grow.<\/p>\n
