A \u00a3175,000 investment programme is set to begin at an Alfreton town centre pub.<\/p>\n
The King Alfred, on Alfreton High Street, will temporarily close at the end of May while works are carried out by Star Pubs, part of Heineken, alongside operators Jack and Carla Jarvis, who took over the business earlier this year.<\/p>\n
The project will include upgrades to both the interior and exterior of the Tudor-style property, which dates back to the 1930s, alongside changes designed to broaden the venue\u2019s food, drink, sport and entertainment offer.<\/p>\n
Plans include a redesigned internal layout featuring a games room, refreshed lounge and bar areas, upgraded seating and improved viewing areas for live sport.<\/p>\n
A programme of events, including quizzes, live entertainment and themed evenings, is also planned following reopening.<\/p>\n
Externally, investment will focus on restoring the building fa\u00e7ade and improving outdoor trading space, including updates to the rear garden with new seating, lighting and landscaping.<\/p>\n
The refurbishment comes after Jack and Carla Jarvis signed a five-year lease on the pub, following efforts to rebuild trade after taking over the site in January 2025.<\/p>\n
Jack Jarvis said: \u201cGrowing up in pubs, I\u2019ve seen firsthand the positive difference a good local makes to people\u2019s lives. Something is lost when a pub closes. The King Alfred was on its knees when we first saw it, and people were concerned for its future. It\u2019s so prominent; everyone knows it and it means a lot residents. We hope the investment will help the town centre and its other businesses, as well as providing a great place for people to meet up and enjoy happy times on their doorsteps without the hassle and expense of travelling further afield.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll be starting as we mean to go on with England\u2019s first match of the World Cup \u2013 the staff will be dressed up, the pub will be decorated, and we\u2019ll be going all out to create a brilliant atmosphere that is the next best thing to being at the game.\u201d<\/p>\n
