A major fire at Thurmaston Shopping Centre caused the roof of Mountain Warehouse to collapse on Saturday morning, prompting a major emergency response and disruption across the retail park.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said it received multiple calls reporting a large blaze affecting several units at around 6 am on Saturday, June 20.

Eight fire engines, two aerial ladder appliances and more than 40 firefighters were deployed to tackle the incident, with a significant smoke plume visible across the surrounding area. Local residents were urged to keep windows and doors closed as crews worked to bring the fire under control.

The fire has now been extinguished, although firefighters remain on site to ensure there are no further flare-ups. At its peak, the incident drew a large crowd, with residents gathering near the shopping centre as emergency services continued operations.

By mid-morning, fire crews were removing roof tiles and dampening down hotspots around the affected units. Four fire engines and one aerial ladder remained at the scene as the response scaled down.

Transport disruption has also eased, with Barkby Thorpe Lane reopening to traffic after being temporarily closed during the emergency response.

The incident has caused significant disruption for retailers at the centre. PureGym, Superdrug, Boots and Sports Direct are expected to reopen shortly, alongside the shopping centre car park.

However, Greggs, Mountain Warehouse and Marks & Spencer will remain closed while assessments continue.

The incident has triggered one of the largest fire service responses seen in the area in recent times.

In a statement, Leicester Fire Station said: “Fire Service have received multiple calls to a large fire at Thurmaston Shopping Centre affecting several units. Fire Service currently have 8 fire engines, 2 Aerial appliances and over 40 firefighters in attendance. There is a significant smoke plume and local residents are being advised to keep windows and doors closed.”

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, and the full extent of damage to affected retail units remains unclear. Further updates are expected as the incident develops.
