Capital.

His early focus has been on bringing greater cohesion to an organisation that had historically operated across multiple divisions with a degree of independence, aligning them instead around a single, more unified direction.

One of his earliest impressions was the breadth of the customer base now using DX services. While already familiar with the business from his long career in logistics, he said the level of diversification across sectors had expanded significantly in recent years.

He said: “Actually, one of the biggest surprises has been the diversity of the kind of customers and the sectors in which they operate that we serve.

“I mean, I’ve known quite a bit about DX, having, you know, been in the logistics industry for a long time. But it was a little surprised to see just how diversified the X’s customer base had become over the last 3 or 4 years.”

That shift has been underpinned by a widening of services beyond traditional parcel and freight operations, into contract logistics, dedicated transport and time-critical delivery solutions. For Truesdale, that evolution has fundamentally reshaped the business.

“It was a much broader set of capabilities and services serving a much wider customer base. That was kind of the biggest surprise,” he said.

Alongside the operational breadth, he pointed to the strength of the workforce and long-standing customer relationships as one of the group’s defining advantages.

“The highlight, really, has been the people that I’ve met, not only internally but externally, and the reputation that DX has with its customers is tremendous, and we have a lot of very loyal, very long-term customers. And we have a workforce inside the business, that’s incredibly passionate about serving those customers. So the people are amazing.”

That people-first culture has shaped his approach to his first year in the role, particularly as the business continues to operate under the expectations of private equity ownership. H.I.G. Capital acquired DX in a take-private transaction and has set clear ambitions around growth, market share expansion and service development.

However, Truesdale said the organisation initially lacked a single, cohesive strategic framework.

“Being private equity owned, the owners or investors had specific goals around driving growth and driving our market share and expanding into new services.

“And we didn’t really have a very clear strategy as a company. We had a number of divisions that were operating quite independently, and we didn’t have a single unifying strategy.”

Establishing that unified direction became one of his key priorities. He led a structured internal process involving senior leadership teams, followed by external testing with customers before launching a refreshed strategy earlier this year.

“My 2nd priority, once I got to learn about the business, was to define and develop and define and then launch a new strategy for the business,” he said. We had a lot of very good internal alignment sessions with senior leadership team, not commercial teams around the business, agreeing what the right strategy was, and then testing that out internally and with our customers at the end of last year.

“And then we launched that new strategy at the beginning of this year, which included repositioning the business as a broader logistics company.”

That repositioning has also been reflected externally, including a shift in digital identity to signal a more integrated proposition.

“We even changed our website URL, to DX logistics.com.”

A central pillar of the strategy is DX’s UK-wide hub network, which underpins its parcel, freight and logistics operations across more than 105 depot and hub locations.

The network spans key regions, including two sites in Nuneaton and a major hub in Willenhall in the West Midlands; Nottingham (two locations) and Northampton in the East Midlands; Haydock and Manchester in the North West; Glasgow in Scotland; and Bristol in the South West.

Truesdale said this footprint is critical to maintaining service density and supporting customers as volumes increase and consignments become more complex.

He said: “Physical space is often a constraint. So new customers bring physically larger volumes. The ability to expand existing sites and then add new sites is really important.”

He also acknowledged that coverage is not uniform across the UK, highlighting areas where further strengthening is needed.

“Where there’s a larger concentration of customers that we perhaps don’t have a strong enough presence is more in the East Midlands and northeast Midlands.”

That insight is now feeding into ongoing network planning and future investment decisions, particularly in high-density logistics corridors.

Acquisitions remain another core growth lever, used both to extend geographic reach and to add new capabilities more quickly than organic expansion alone would allow.

Recent deals include Express Freight in Northern Ireland and HBC Logistics, a same-day specialist that also brought additional technology capability into the group.

“Express freight were based in Northern Ireland, and we didn’t have much of a presence, much footprint, or many customers in Northern Ireland,” he said.

“So that was a geographic expansion into Northern Ireland, and also helped with the connectivity between Northern Ireland and southern Ireland. The other acquisition we’ve made recently was HBC logistics… they bring some technology, new technology, a platform for our customers to start requesting and shipping same-day deliveries.”

The move into same-day delivery reflects wider changes in customer expectations, with speed and flexibility now central to supply chain decision-making.

“So up until we bought HBC, we’d only been partly dabbling a little bit in a same-day service. HBC were a same-day specialist that brought up a platform with them, and that enables us to then integrate it with wider customers.”

Future acquisitions, he added, will continue to follow the same principle: adding capability, technology or network density that can be scaled across the wider group.

“We’ll be doing things similar in the future, some acquisitions that add capabilities or services or new technologies that we can integrate and then offer to all of our existing customers,” he said.

For now, newly acquired businesses retain their identities during an initial phase while being integrated operationally and commercially.

“So the strategy is that certainly for an initial period, they keep their name… HBC logistics is now HBC logistics, you know, a DX company. We integrate the services. We cross-sell.”

As well as acquisitions, infrastructure investment remains central to the group’s growth plans. With more than 6,500 employees across the UK, DX continues to assess where capacity constraints are emerging within its national hub network.

Truesdale said physical expansion is essential to support both rising volumes and changing customer requirements.

“Physical space is often always a constraint. So new customers new bring physically larger volumes. The ability to expand existing sites and then add new new sites is really important,” he said.

At a regional level, he pointed to ongoing opportunities to strengthen presence in parts of the East Midlands and surrounding areas, where customer density is high but penetration can still be improved.

At the service level, growth is increasingly being driven by customers consolidating multiple logistics needs into a single provider relationship.

“Where we’re seeing the most interest is where we’re trying to combine these things together into an integrated offering. We call it a one stop shop service.”

That trend is particularly strong among mid-sized UK businesses looking to simplify supply chains and reduce the complexity of managing multiple providers.

“We don’t target massive multinationals. But a good-sized mid-tier British company that’s looking for a partner, that’s, that can do all of their logistics. That’s where we’re seeing the most traction in the market at the moment.”

This integrated approach is also opening up further opportunities in warehousing and fulfilment, moving DX deeper into customers’ supply chains.

“If we can offer them the service to take over and run their distribution centre… it gives us the ability not only to expand that service, but also look for opportunities to integrate the technology and use automation and even AI,” he said.

Customer expectations, particularly around speed, continue to reshape the market, with same-day delivery now moving from niche to mainstream demand.

“It’s all about doing it much faster, getting products much, much sooner. We are now expanding and offering that same day service… even within a few hours.”

He added, however, that ultra-fast fulfilment inevitably comes with cost implications.

“If you want it really fast, you have to pay for it.”

Looking ahead, Truesdale said DX’s success will be measured less by short-term financial performance and more by sustained engagement across customers and employees.

“The 2 most important measures of success for me are increasing levels of customer engagement and increasing levels of employee engagement. If we’re focusing on our people and we’re focussing on our customers… we will naturally grow the business. We will naturally generate revenue and profit.”

Ultimately, he said, the focus is not on chasing financial outcomes in isolation, but on building the operational and cultural conditions that allow them to follow naturally.

“The focus isn’t on generating the profit, the focus is on making sure that we’re satisfying and exceeding our customer expectations. And if we have really satisfied, happy, motivated customers and colleagues that are doing a tremendous job… financial results will take care of themselves.”

New leadership is reshaping strategy and tightening a nationwide network to drive integrated
