A new vision for Nottingham\u2019s future has been unveiled, with residents calling for a greener and more inclusive city through a climate manifesto shaped by local communities.<\/p>\n
The Nottingham Environment & Climate Assembly manifesto brings together more than two years of work from residents, including mini assemblies and a dedicated youth assembly, to create a roadmap for tackling climate challenges while improving life across the city.<\/p>\n
The document sets out a vision for Nottingham as a \u201cforest city\u201d with cleaner air, healthier waterways and greater access to nature, while placing residents at the centre of decisions around climate action.<\/p>\n
Recommendations cover a range of areas including buildings and energy, transport, food and health, nature, skills, waste and water. Proposals include retrofitting buildings to improve energy efficiency, expanding community gardens, increasing local food production, creating safer walking and cycling routes, and introducing repair and recycling initiatives.<\/p>\n
The manifesto also calls for more accessible green space across the city, with a target of ensuring every resident can reach nature within a 15-minute walk. It proposes creating neighbourhood green hubs featuring local markets, skills workshops and youth activities.<\/p>\n
The assembly\u2019s recommendations will now be presented to city leaders, with delegates calling for the creation of a task force to help turn the ideas into action.<\/p>\n
Councillor Sam Lux, Executive Member for Environment and Sustainability at Nottingham City Council, said: \u201cIt has never been more apparent that we are living in the midst of a climate crisis. Now is our last chance to act. If we don\u2019t do so in accordance with the will of Nottingham people we aren\u2019t going to succeed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s why this climate assembly manifesto is nothing less than critical and I will be determined to translate as much of it into immediate policy as practically possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
The assembly was organised by the Nottingham Climate Assembly and supported by the Nottingham Green Partnership, with funding from the Mayor of the East Midlands, local organisations and individuals through a Crowdfunder.<\/p>\n
Mayor of the East Midlands Claire Ward said: \u201cThis manifesto shows what can happen when local people are trusted to shape the future of their city. It is ambitious, practical and rooted in the pride Nottingham people have in the place they call home.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am proud to support the Nottingham Climate Assembly because lasting change happens when communities are involved from the start. My \u00a39.9m investment in domestic retrofit alongside investing millions in cycling and walking improvements across the city reflects that same commitment to creating greener, healthier places that put people, nature and opportunity at the heart of regeneration.\u201d<\/p>\n
The manifesto has been welcomed by Nottingham\u2019s MPs, who highlighted the importance of involving residents in shaping environmental policy.<\/p>\n
Lilian Greenwood, MP for Nottingham South, said: \u201cOur environment shapes who we are \u2013 when our environment thrives, we thrive too. I believe that it is essential that we work together as a city to protect and restore our environment and safeguard our natural resources.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex Norris, MP for Nottingham North and Kimberley, added: \u201cThe work of the Nottingham Environment and Climate Assembly, organised entirely by volunteers, is hugely important. I look forward to discussing the proposals with delegates from my constituency in the coming weeks to discuss how we can put their ideas into action.\u201d<\/p>\n
The assembly model, which has been used in locations including Ireland and Camden, aims to give communities a stronger role in decision-making and create practical solutions through public participation.<\/p>\n
