More than half (53%) of warnings during the period cited policy changes and geopolitical uncertainty as a key factor — the highest quarterly proportion recorded for this cause in more than 25 years of analysis.

External disruption continues to influence corporate performance, with two in five UK profit warnings since the start of the Middle East conflict referencing its impact. Rising costs were also cited in 27% of warnings, while contract and order cancellations or delays featured in 25% and weaker consumer confidence in 14%.

Industrial businesses accounted for the largest share of Midlands warnings during the second quarter, with four issued across the sector.

During the first half of 2026, Consumer Discretionary and Industrials were the most affected sectors in the region, each recording five profit warnings.

The figures highlight the contrasting pressures facing the Midlands economy, with manufacturers managing supply chain and cost challenges while consumer-facing businesses deal with cautious spending patterns.

Software and Computer Services and Construction and Materials were also among the sectors recording the highest number of warnings during the first six months of the year, showing the breadth of challenges affecting businesses across the region.

Kris Aspin, EY-Parthenon Financial Restructuring Leader in the Midlands said: “The flat year-on-year profit warnings position for the first half underlines that persistent and widespread pressures continue to impact business in the Midlands.

“The prominence of the Industrials sector in these figures is particularly significant for the region, given the Midlands’ strong manufacturing base and its role at the heart of UK supply chains. Businesses in these sectors are navigating a complex mix of elevated input costs, fluctuating demand and ongoing uncertainty, which is continuing to weigh on performance.

“At the same time, warnings from consumer discretionary sectors also demonstrate the impact of more cautious spending behaviour, as households remain focused on value and delay non-essential purchases.

“Taken together, this highlights the dual exposure of the Midlands economy to both industrial and consumer-led pressures. Businesses that can maintain cost discipline, manage working capital effectively and adapt quickly to changing demand patterns will be better placed to navigate what remains a highly uncertain environment.”

Claire Gambles, EY-Parthenon UKI Reshaping Results Lead said: “Whilst profit warnings in the Midlands eased slightly in the second quarter, the broader picture remains one of sustained pressure on UK-listed companies. The overall level of warnings continues to reflect a challenging operating environment, shaped by ongoing geopolitical disruption, policy uncertainty and persistent cost inflation.

“As these pressures continue to work their way through supply chains, customer demand and pricing dynamics, their impact is unlikely to be immediate and will not be felt equally across businesses. Instead, many companies are facing a gradual erosion of margins, which may take time to fully materialise in earnings performance.

“Although warning volumes appear to be stabilising, the proportion of companies affected remains elevated. This suggests that, rather than a clear turning point, businesses are adapting to an extended period of lower growth, higher costs and a more volatile economic environment.”

Companies listed on the stock market in the Midlands issued six profit warnings between April and June
