Leicester City Council is preparing to invest £4m of government funding in projects aimed at improving the city centre and supporting its regeneration.

The funding, from the government’s Growing Places Fund, is expected to be allocated across a series of schemes covering public spaces, empty properties, events and future development opportunities.

The largest proposed allocation is £1.75m towards the potential future acquisition of land linked to the Midland Street regeneration scheme.

A further £1.3m has been earmarked for Market Place and the Lanes area, with plans to improve shopfronts, lighting and public spaces while adding more market stalls.

The council is also proposing £300,000 for improved lighting, signage and public spaces around key arrival points including Leicester railway station, the bus station and city centre car parks.

Another £250,000 would target areas affected by antisocial behaviour through measures including better lighting, security improvements and graffiti removal.

A further £200,000 is proposed for bringing vacant premises back into use, while £200,000 would support infrastructure for festivals and events.

The proposed spending was set out in a report prepared by the Labour-run authority, with a decision on the allocation due to be taken by city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby on 18 August.

Soulsby said: “We have already made significant investment into the city centre in recent years, and this funding will allow us to do even more to make it an attractive and welcoming destination. The new funding will boost the work that goes on every day to make it a place that residents can be proud of, and that visitors choose to return to time and again.”
