{"id":2114177,"date":"2026-08-24T00:01:45","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T23:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/eastmidlands\/?p=2114177"},"modified":"2026-08-24T00:04:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T23:04:55","slug":"5.25m-bgf-rescue-package-couldnt-stop-engineering-suppliers-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/eastmidlands\/news\/2114177-5.25m-bgf-rescue-package-couldnt-stop-engineering-suppliers-collapse","title":{"rendered":"\u00a35.25m BGF rescue package couldn&#8217;t stop engineering supplier&#8217;s collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">BGF pumped \u00a35.25m into United Tooling Solutions in its final months, but rescue funding wasn&#8217;t enough to save 75 jobs<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">New details of the collapse of United Tooling Solutions (UTS) have emerged, showing the scale of last-ditch funding poured into the business by backer BGF in the months before it fell into administration.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/eastmidlands\/news\/2111940-75-jobs-lost-as-midlands-engineering-supplier-collapses-into-administration\">The Blaby-based engineering and industrial supplies group, along with sister company Grahams Machinery Sales (GMS), appointed Kristopher Aspin, Samuel Woodward and Lucy Winterborne of EY as joint administrators on 18 June, with the immediate loss of 75 jobs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A statement of proposals now filed at Companies House shows investor BGF committed \u00a34.25m in November 2025 and a further \u00a31m in March 2026 in an attempt to keep the group trading.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">UTS had been in the process of being carved out of the Troy UK Group since January 2025, in a deal conditional on government clearance. Troy&#8217;s own administrators pressed ahead with the transaction anyway, transferring the business for \u00a31 plus partial settlement of a \u00a33.5m intercompany debt. Management believe the fallout hit UTS hard, with suppliers tightening credit terms and shortening payment periods, adding further strain to working capital.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Senior lender Shawbrook Bank, which held first-ranking fixed and floating charge security over the group&#8217;s assets, was owed around \u00a34.8m \u2014 higher than the \u00a34.5m indicated in the directors&#8217; original statement of affairs, before interest, charges and administration funding are added. Shawbrook continued to fund elements of the wind-down after appointment, advancing \u00a3255,000 to support an orderly collection of the companies&#8217; book debts by specialist agency JP Associates.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite the support from both BGF and Shawbrook, a restructuring in October 2025 that closed 13 branches failed to return the group to profitability. UTS then ran an accelerated sale process, approaching 27 parties and signing non-disclosure agreements with 10 of them. By the closing date for offers on 16 June, no bid had been received for the group as a whole \u2014 only one for a handful of branches as a going concern, and a scattering of offers for stock and assets at others. The board concluded the following day that the companies could no longer continue trading outside insolvency.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Statement of Proposals also confirms that turnover had swung from \u00a356.2m in FY24 down 12.8% to \u00a349.0m in the group&#8217;s draft FY25 accounts, while losses widened sharply to \u00a328.7m for the year, though that figure includes \u00a320.8m of investment, intercompany and restructuring charges.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Administrators say they don&#8217;t expect any of the companies&#8217; assets to stretch to a distribution for unsecured creditors, including \u00a31.2m owed to HMRC, and do not intend to seek a creditors&#8217; vote on their proposals as a result. Unpaid pre-administration costs of \u00a3169,000 are also being claimed, including \u00a3277,000 of EY fees for contingency planning carried out in the run-up to the
