Plans to bring a long-vacant unit at Fosse Park West back into use are set to move forward, despite objections from Leicester City Council and Highcross.<\/p>\n
Developer Wexford Retail LP is seeking permission to split one of the larger units into two shops, creating units of 5,005 sq ft and 6,512 sq ft.<\/p>\n
The proposals would increase the number of retail units at Fosse Park West from eight to nine, with no increase in overall floor space.<\/p>\n
The applicant says the move could create around 42 full- and part-time jobs.<\/p>\n
The unit has reportedly been vacant since the development was built and has been marketed for more than seven years.<\/p>\n
Wexford has carried out a sequential assessment of alternative sites, including locations highlighted by Highcross, but concluded there were no suitable and available sites in higher-order retail centres.<\/p>\n
Highcross and the city council have raised concerns that further subdivision could weaken Leicester city centre and represent a gradual relaxation of planning restrictions governing Fosse Park.<\/p>\n
However, Blaby District Council planning officers have recommended approval, concluding the proposal would not have a significant adverse impact on higher-order retail centres.<\/p>\n
