Demolition preparations have begun on two prominent Nottingham city centre buildings as part of a major redevelopment of the Broadmarsh area.

Homes England is behind the scheme, which will see the former People’s College building and NCP Maid Marian Way car park removed to make way for a new mixed-use neighbourhood.

Plans for the site include around 1,000 new homes alongside 20,000 sq m of retail, office and community space, forming part of the wider transformation of the Broadmarsh area.

Initial works began on Wednesday 9 September, with demolition contractor DSM Demolition carrying out preparatory activity around the Castle Gate junction.

The works are expected to cause disruption to traffic until the end of November, with lane closures and temporary traffic lights being introduced. No bus services are expected to be diverted, although Nottingham City Transport has warned of delays.

Traffic arrangements will change as different sections of the Maid Marian Way car park are demolished. By the end of September, traffic will be moved onto the northbound side of the road while the section of the car park above the road is removed.

A further change is planned for November, when traffic will switch to the southbound side to allow the remainder of the car park to be demolished and work to begin on the former college site.

The former Castle College building dates back to the 1960s and has been vacant since 2024, when Bluecoat Academy returned the property to Nottingham City Council.

The demolition forms part of a wider programme of investment in the Broadmarsh area, which already includes Nottingham Central Library, the new bus station and car park on Carrington Street, and the Green Heart next to the former shopping centre.

A new NHS Community Diagnostic Centre is also being developed within part of the former Broadmarsh Shopping Centre buildings.

Homes England has confirmed that the Traffic Flow artwork on the side of the Maid Marian Way car park will also be relocated as part of the works.

Maid Marian Way is expected to be fully reopened ahead of Christmas.
