Derby\u2019s two existing Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) have published a prospectus setting out plans to combine into a single organisation covering Cathedral Quarter, St Peters Quarter and the neighbouring Becketwell area.<\/p>\n
The 24-page document has been distributed to 1,000 businesses across the city following a consultation and business survey designed to establish shared priorities for the proposed Derby BID.<\/p>\n
Feedback gathered through business visits, workshops, briefings and direct discussions identified improved communication, practical business support, investment and stronger partnerships as key areas for development.<\/p>\n
The prospectus also sets out the work delivered by the existing BIDs. Their Rangers completed more than 19,000 hours on duty, conducted 23,000 business visits and recorded more than 3,200 public-facing and ambassadorial engagements.<\/p>\n
Other initiatives have included regular crime meetings and Safer Business Action Days, bringing businesses together with police, Police Community Support Officers and Public Protection Officers.<\/p>\n
The BIDs have also worked with city partners to maintain Derby\u2019s Purple Flag accreditation for 13 consecutive years, while providing trauma kits, defibrillators and CPR training. Community Action Group meetings have helped coordinate responses to homelessness, rough sleeping and persistent anti-social behaviour.<\/p>\n
Events including Jurassic Day, the Mod event, character meet-and-greets and Christmas markets have also been used to attract visitors into the city centre.<\/p>\n
Brad Worley, BID manager for Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter, said: \u201cThis prospectus showcases just how much we can achieve when we work together. Our Rangers have supported businesses and visitors, events have brought families into the city, and our partnership has helped businesses voice issues that matter.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe results are visible in the day-to-day life of the city centre. Businesses have had a regular point of contact on the street, visitors receive a warm welcome and we signpost environmental issues with the right authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n
The proposal comes as Derby\u2019s city centre continues to evolve, with Becketwell bringing new leisure, cultural and residential investment into the area. The proposed merger is intended to align resources and priorities across the three locations while recognising their individual characteristics.<\/p>\n
Fraser Cunningham, chair of the Cathedral Quarter BID board and partner at law firm Smith Partnership, said the proposal had been shaped by engagement with businesses across the proposed area.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cThe development of the Derby BID proposal has been informed by consultation with businesses across Cathedral Quarter, St Peters Quarter and Becketwell. The process was designed to understand how we can collectively invest and make the greatest difference during the next five years.<\/p>\n
\u201cA detailed business survey was supported by direct conversations, business visits, workshops, briefings and opportunities to provide written feedback. This allowed the research to identify priorities shared across the proposed BID area while also recognising that different locations and sectors experience the city centre in different ways.<\/p>\n
