Nottingham City Council is proposing a \u00a319m investment programme to address essential building repairs across its estate, including more than \u00a311.6m of work to preserve the city\u2019s historic Council House.<\/p>\n
The proposed investment would fund a range of improvements to the landmark building, including roof repairs, stonework restoration and upgrades to internal and external security.<\/p>\n
Opened in 1929, the Council House remains a key part of Nottingham\u2019s civic infrastructure, with the planned works intended to protect the property as it approaches its centenary.<\/p>\n
The proposals form part of a wider strategy to maintain council-owned buildings, tackle outstanding maintenance requirements and reduce the likelihood of more costly repairs in the future.<\/p>\n
Alongside the Council House project, the proposed three-year programme would cover priority maintenance across several other sites, including roof repairs at Loxley House and further investment at St Ann\u2019s Valley Centre, Byron House and the Royal Concert Hall.<\/p>\n
Work would be scheduled according to the level of risk and urgency, helping the authority manage its property portfolio while minimising potential disruption to public services.<\/p>\n
The plans also sit alongside a proposed \u00a33.5m regeneration of Old Market Square, which would introduce additional trees, planting, green space and a new water feature. Together, the projects form part of the wider Nottingham Vision programme, which aims to improve the city centre and its public spaces.<\/p>\n
Councillor Jay Hayes, executive member for housing and planning said: \u201cThe Council House is one of Nottingham\u2019s most recognisable landmarks and has been an important part of our city\u2019s civic life for almost a century. This proposed investment would help protect the building for future generations, ensuring it remains a place Nottingham people can be proud of.<\/p>\n
