Leicester-born solicitor and Crown Prosecution Service prosecutor Naila Iqbal has taken over as president of the Leicestershire Law Society, setting out plans to support emerging legal talent and strengthen links across the profession.

Iqbal assumed the role on 14 October 2026, bringing more than 20 years of legal experience to the position.

She qualified as a solicitor in 2004, initially working in family and immigration law, before joining the Crown Prosecution Service in 2006, where she has spent two decades prosecuting criminal cases.

Her presidential theme, Find Your Voice, aims to encourage confidence and participation among lawyers at all stages of their careers.

Supporting future legal professionals will be a key priority. Iqbal plans to build on the Society’s relationships with the University of Leicester, De Montfort University and Loughborough University, while strengthening links with the Leicestershire Junior Lawyers Division.

Plans include practical workshops covering advocacy, client interviewing and interview preparation, alongside more opportunities for members across private practice, the public sector and in-house legal teams to connect.

Iqbal also intends to use her presidency to support two local charities: Leicester Hospitals Charity and Leicester City in the Community, which delivers education, wellbeing and employment programmes for young people, families and communities.

She said: “Leicester is home. I was born and brought up here, so becoming President of the Leicestershire Law Society is a particularly proud moment for me.

“Having spent twenty years as a prosecutor, I know how important it is for people to have a voice and to be heard. But finding your voice isn’t just about speaking in court. It’s about having the confidence to ask questions, share ideas, take opportunities and believe that you belong.

“Leicester has given me a great deal, both personally and professionally, and I want to use this opportunity to give something back. These two charities do important work for people across our city and county, and I’m really looking forward to supporting them during the year.”
