A specialist lender targeting established UK businesses is aiming to deploy more than \u00a3200m in its first year, with plans to grow annual lending originations beyond \u00a31bn as it seeks to address a funding gap for mid-sized companies.<\/p>\n
Ignite Funding Partners, founded by former ThinCats managing director Ravi Anand, has entered the UK lending market offering facilities of between \u00a31m and \u00a325m to businesses pursuing expansion, acquisitions, ownership transitions and refinancing.<\/p>\n
The business is assembling \u00a3500m in lending capital from institutional investors and aims to build its loan book to almost \u00a31bn within three years.<\/p>\n
Ignite is targeting established businesses with strong management teams and sustainable profits, particularly those operating in business services, technology and professional services.<\/p>\n
Anand believes companies in this market are being overlooked by traditional banks and challenger lenders, leaving them without the specialist support needed to realise their growth ambitions.<\/p>\n
\u201cEstablished, growth-focused mid-sized SMEs are underserved by both the mainstream and challenger banks. They need a lender that understands their business, can move quickly, and can structure funding around their plans. That is the gap Ignite is built to fill. As a non-bank lender our approach is flexible and transparent, everything a bank is not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The lender is targeting businesses with between 10 and 249 employees, a segment that represents a significant proportion of UK private sector employment and turnover despite accounting for a relatively small share of the overall business population.<\/p>\n
According to Ignite’s research, mid-sized SMEs that borrow to invest in growth are three times more likely to achieve revenue growth of inflation plus 50% than those that do not borrow.<\/p>\n
Anand said the funding would help established businesses invest in the areas most likely to accelerate their development.<\/p>\n
\u201cGiving an established, proven business the means to invest in its people, its products, its physical presence or an acquisition which can accelerate its growth significantly.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ignite plans to support businesses across the UK, with team members already based in Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, the Midlands and southern England. The firm is also planning to open a dedicated Manchester office in 2027 as it develops its regional presence.<\/p>\n
Building relationships with local business advisers and investors will be central to its approach, helping the lender connect with companies seeking finance beyond the capital and South East.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur team has more than 200 relationships across the adviser and sponsor community and has originated more than \u00a32.5bn from this market over the last ten years,\u201d Anand said.<\/p>\n
His experience includes leading ThinCats, where he helped oversee a business that originated more than \u00a32.5bn in lending to UK companies. He has recruited a number of former colleagues to Ignite, with the team bringing experience across commercial and investment banking, asset management and private credit.<\/p>\n
Anand said the economic environment had made growth more challenging for many established businesses, citing rising costs and uncertainty over the outlook for UK enterprise.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese businesses have faced a run of challenges over several years, including inflation, interest rate rises and higher employment costs. Right now, they are also suffering from a lack of confidence that the government will create an environment where entrepreneurs are incentivised and encouraged to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n
Technology will form a key part of Ignite’s operating model, with purpose-built artificial intelligence tools designed to analyse company financial information, identify insights and improve the efficiency of lending decisions.<\/p>\n
Anand said the technology would complement the experience of the lending team rather than replace its judgement.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur AI tools will give us deeper insight when analysing a business\u2019s financials, creating efficiencies and generating insights we can share with borrowers. Application times will not only be shorter, but outcomes will also become more predictable.\u201d<\/p>\n
The founder also highlighted the importance of building a business around relationships, with team members holding stakes in Ignite and investors and board members known personally to the leadership team.<\/p>\n
