Ginger Butchers has created 20 jobs after expanding into a larger premises in Matlock, bringing its butchery, deli, farm shop and cafe together in the former Wilko building on Bank Road.

The Peak District family business moved into the unit at 2-4 Bank Road this summer after outgrowing its smaller shop across the road, which opened in 2023.

It was previously occupied by Poundland following Wilko’s departure but had been vacant since the discount retailer moved out.

The expansion gives the business additional space to develop its retail offer and serve customers across several areas, with new roles spanning the shop floor, cafe, farm, cutting room and bakehouse.

The new premises feature a butcher’s counter selling beef, lamb and pork raised by the Armstrong family at New Close Farm in Over Haddon, near Bakewell, alongside meat sourced from farms known to the business.

Ed Armstrong, who runs the shops with his brother Tom, said: “We’d always wanted a cafe, so people can try before they buy. You have your pie, chips and peas in the cafe, then you come and buy the pie, or the sausages, or the breakfast. It leads into each other. My dad always used to say nothing ventured, nothing gained, give the ball a good kick. So that’s what we did.”

A deli counter stocks the family’s cooked meats, pies and sausage rolls, as well as cheeses and hot and cold takeaway sandwiches. The farm shop brings together products from local suppliers, including Peak District honey, oils and flour, and organic milk from a nearby dairy.

The site also incorporates Ginger’s Kitchen & Cafe, serving refreshments, cakes and hot meals, including pie, chips and peas.

Ginger Butchers manages much of its supply chain in-house. The family rears Hereford and Dexter cattle, sheep and pigs at its farm, with additional meat sourced from other farms it knows. Butchery and baking are carried out in its own cutting room and bakehouse at New Close Farm, with products then delivered to its shops. Beef is hung on the bone for at least four weeks.

The expansion builds on the family’s long-standing involvement in farming and butchery. The Armstrongs are fourth-generation butchers and have farmed at New Close Farm since 1962. Ed and Tom run the business alongside their mother, Gill.

Their Bakewell shop opened in 2010 and was subsequently expanded in 2020 and 2022, with the latter development introducing a deli counter. The Matlock investment marks a further stage in the family’s growth, extending its combined retail and food service offer in the town.

The Peak District National Park Authority welcomed the business’s continued development beyond the park boundary, highlighting the importance of farming to the area’s identity.

“Farming has always been at the heart of the Peak District National Park’s identity, and it is great to see local family business Ginger Butchers continuing to thrive and expand outside of the National Park boundary. We wish them every success with their new venture in the historic town of Matlock.”
