PDA helps set standard for apprentices
The UK’s largest trade body for the Painting and Decorating sector has helped set the standard for apprentices embarking on their Level 2 Apprenticeships in the next academic year.
The Painting and Decorating Association’s (PDA) Education and Training Committee joined forces with Ann Cook Associates and the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) to create a new occupational standard and End Point Assessment.
The Level 2 Apprentice standard (ST0295), review and EPA (End Point Assessment) has been approved by the Department for Education, ready for delivery in September.
The move means apprentices will be able to study a programme that has been evaluated and shaped by expertise within the industry.
Chief Executive of the PDA, Neil Ogilvie said: “Going forward, employers and training providers will know that Level 2 apprentices are hitting the key target areas of our craft, so they qualify as a true professional painter and decorator.
“The redevelopment of this L2 qualification ensures apprentices have the correct skills and knowledge to succeed in their working life.
“Our thanks go to PDA’s Education & Training Committee, Ann Cook Associates, IfATE and all the employers and providers who have played a big part in the review process.
“We look forward to seeing painters and decorators at the very beginning of their career in colour putting this new standard into practice over the coming academic year.”
Julie Lawrenson, Head of Learning & Development at Bell Group and Chair of the PDA’s Education and Training Committee was appointed Chair of the Trailblazer Group and led on the discussions with IfATE presenting a case to their Route Panel at the outset of the L2 review process as well as emphasising the need for reinstatement of a Level 3 Apprenticeship standard.
Julie added: “This is a great achievement for the committee members and wider industry.
“I believe we have developed a standard that is both fit for purpose and sustainable and which should encourage the uptake of apprentices for many years to come.
“Work on setting the standard and EPA for Level 3 apprenticeships has already begun.”
