Birmingham launches partner search for Ladywood regeneration

Ladywood sits to the west of Birmingham city centre

Birmingham City Council is this week talking to investors and developers about its ambitions for a housing-led transformation of the Ladywood part of the city.

The development area covers 62 hectares and is being described as one of the largest city centre estate renewals in the UK.

Ladywood is the largely-residential area from Brindleyplace and Five Ways towards Edgbaston Reservoir and the Greater Ickneild scheme.

Urban Splash and the Galliard Apsley Partnership are leading on Port Loop and Soho Loop developments for Greater Ickneild as the investments in housing begin to move out of the core city centre at larger scale.

Birmingham City Council has wanted to embark on a large-scale regeneration of the area since it launched its Big City Plan nine years ago.

At the international property exhibition, MIPIM, it has today announced details of its procurement plans for the selection of investor and developer partners to take forward the regeneration.

Waheed Nazir, corporate director for inclusive growth at Birmingham City Council, said: “With Birmingham now enjoying a significant renaissance there is an opportunity to secure a partner who shares our ambition to deliver more family housing and create a high-quality sustainable place for current and future residents.”

The formal procurement process will begin later this month with the Council inviting successful bidders to participate in dialogue by 21st June. It will then look to select a development partner to lead the work on Ladywood.

Cllr Sharon Thompson, cabinet member for homes and neighbourhoods, added: “This is a huge opportunity to help transform the lives and opportunities of the people that live in this part of the city centre.”
