Sir Howard hails Abu Dhabi trip

MANCHESTER’S leaders have hailed the burgeoning relationship with Abu Dhabi after the recent visit to the Arab Kingdom.
Led by the City council leader Sir Richard Leese and chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein, the 20-strong delegation aimed to build on the foundations laid by the takeover of Manchester City by Abu Dhabi royal Sheikh Mansour 14 months ago.
Representatives from Marketing Manchester – the city’s tourist board, from the universities and Colin Sinclair, chief executive of inward investment agency MIDAS, were also part of the trip earlier this month.
Sir Howard – who during the trip had his first face-to-face meeting with Sheikh Mansour and his brother the Crown Prince said:”During the trip we explored many opportunities and potential partnerships from business alignments, university ties, cultural exchanges and yes the obvious sporting links.
“The schedule was full and we learned much about the place and its people and we respect their plans.”
Sir Howard, declined to comment on whether extending the City of Manchester Stadium – which is owned by the council and leased to Manchester City – had been discussed.
He said the council and Manchester Airport were working with Etihad – the national airline of Abu Dhabi – to explore trade, leisure and cultural links between the city and the kingdom.
“Etihad is showing great commitment to the city and we look forward to a close working relationship with them in the future. Andrew Harrison from Manchester Airport and I met with James Hogan, Etihad’s chief executive to discuss opportunities and explore how we can support their needs. It was a positive conversation.”
