Profits drop at Maglite distributor Bollin

THE company behind brands such as Maglite torches and Ronhill and Sprayway outdoor clothing saw profits slump by 45% last year.

Macclesfield-based Bollin Group, which distributes a range of branded goods, said earnings had been hit by tough trading in the year to June 30.

Group turnover rose by 4% to £47.6m but pre-tax profits on continuing operations fell to £988,374 from £1.7m the previous year, according to newly-filed accounts.

In their report the directors said the results were in line with expectations and they predicted 2009-10 would also be “difficult”.

During the period Bollin sold off its loss-making ceramic manufacturing operation within its Park Rose business.

It also acquired Hyde-based sporting goods business Hilly Clothing for £750,000 which was set up by former marathon champion Ron Hill. The directors described it as a complementary brand that will strengthen its position in the sports market.

Bollin employed 319 people during the year.
