FIRST Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) has announced the details of the contractors who will undertake the a £149m programme of investments into its housing stock over the next five years.

The contractors appointed will carry out £90m of construction work, which is part of an overall £149m investment in the homes over the next four years following the transfer 12,000 homes to the organisation from Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council last February.

FCHO’s board pledged that it would ensure that local people would benefit from the deal, pointing to the fact that local firms from Oldham, Rochdale, Manchester and the wider region are among those appointed to its roster.

FCHO chief executive, Cath Green, said: “The money will be spent improving tenants’ homes and estates – but this is about more than just bricks and mortar.

“Just as important are our contractors’ commitments to creating new apprenticeship schemes. We are working with local employment and training organisations to make sure that local people get those opportunities.”

She added: “We are committed to using local contractors wherever possible so even in these difficult economic times this is a major boost to the whole borough.”
