Council plans £25m Anfield homes refurb

MORE than 370 homes in Anfield which had been earmarked for demolition are to be saved.
Liverpool City Council has announced a £25m plan to redevelop homes in the area – £10m of which has come from the Government’s Empty Homes Initiative. The remainder will come from the city council, the Homes & Communities Agency and social housing provider Your Housing.
The scheme, known as Anfield Village, will see 168 vacant houses brought back into use and a further 206 refurbished. Some 224 houses – 116 of which are vacant – are also being demolished.
The announcement follows several months of consultation with local residents over the plans, with most being in favour. Approval ratings for the plans ranged from 72-88%, depending on the area.
Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said: “This is great news for Anfield and marks a major milestone for this important scheme.
“Residents have waited too long for this work to happen, and have been rightly concerned and frustrated. I’m delighted that we are now working effectively with our partners to drive forward these plans and build a better future for the area.
“I have pledged to build 5,000 homes in Liverpool over the next four years, and I’ve also made it a priority for the city to refurbish more homes than we demolish.
“Although some demolition is still necessary as part of these plans, this is a good example of how we are listening to local people and working with them to bring homes back into use.”
The Anfield Village plans involve around 600 properties which lie in the former phases 6 and 7 of the Anfield Breckfield Area that were scheduled for demolition under the Housing Market Renewal Initiative. The properties fall within the boundary of Back Rockfield Road, Walton Breck Road, Sleepers Hill and Gilman Street.
