Chilean finance minister to showcase export opportunities

THE finance minister of Chile, Felipe Larrain, will be showcasing the opportunities available for North West businesses at key event next month.

Companies interested in trading with the Latin American country can sign up to attend the free event at Old Trafford next month, where they will be able to meet experts in international trade and hear about how they can make the most of business opportunities in Chile.

Organised by UKTI North West, the event will be launched by Mr Larrain, on his first-ever visit to the North West. He will provide an overview of the country’s economy and highlight opportunities across a range of sectors including biotechnology, education and training, energy, infrastructure, financial services, mining and science and innovation.

Clive Drinkwater, regional director for UKTI North West, said: ““Chile has long been recognised as the best run economy in Latin America and offers great opportunities to North West exporters.

“In 2011, UK exports of goods to Chile grew by 26% from £548m in 2010 to £740m, and the market provides an excellent starting point for trade with the region.”

Delegates will be able to attend panel sessions on opportunities in mining and energy and hear first hand about opportunities such as the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), the world’s biggest optical telescope which will be built on top of a mountain in Chile and will become one of the key astronomical facilities of the 21st Century when it is completed in 2022.

There will also be one to one meetings available with market experts Tom Warwick, Head of UKTI at the British Embassy in Santiago, Claire Rason, Senior Commercial Officer at the British Embassy in Santiago and Cristian Lopez, Director of ProChile.

Chilean wine company Casillero De Diablo will be attending the event to speak about its experience in the UK, and there will be the chance to discuss the topics covered in sessions further at a networking lunch.

The event will be held at Manchester United’s ground on September 10 from 8.30am until 1.30pm.

Delegates will also be able to find out more about the North West Trade Mission to Brazil and Chile from 17th – 30th November 2012.
