Logistics Academy for Liverpool

LIVERPOOL Community College has launched a Logistics Academy to provide training for the city’s growing ports and logistics sector.

The UK logistics sector is seen as a key area of growth for Liverpool, particularly with the Peel Group’s plans to create a Super Port for the city, which is expected to create 30,000 jobs. The sector employs around 193,400 people across the North West, more` than 6% of the region’s workforce.

Courses will be offered from the college’s existing centres and will include the Pathway to Apprenticeships for Port Skills Programme, developed for the National Skills Academy for Logistics.

The new programme is being offered at a national level and can be adapted to up-skill staff already working in the sector or train from scratch those looking to work in the port industry.

Della Thomas, employer relationship manager at Liverpool Community College, said: “The logistics sector is a huge industry in the UK, employing more than 2.3 million people. It’s going to be a key plank for the city’s future growth and it’s vital that there is the training and support available to benefit workers in the industry and help those looking for a career in the sector to get the skills and experience they  need.”

She added: “The new Port Induction Programme is a course unique in the UK – and Liverpool Community College will be offering it nationally, training port sector staff and those looking to enter the logistics and port sector. The course has been developed in particular to help young people into work; giving them the skills and training to get their first jobs and pursue a career in logistics.”
