Dave Maguire, CEO, Back on Track

Dr David Maguire is a nationally respected leader, researcher and award-winning author. His journey from school expulsion and imprisonment to a doctorate from the University of Oxford and charity leadership gives him a rare ability to draw on lived, academic and professional experience. Raised in Oldham, David was expelled from school at 15. As a young man without qualifications, he became involved in criminal cultures and drug addiction, leading to multiple periods of imprisonment. In prison, he met an inspirational teacher who opened the door to adult learning and helped him secure a formal neurodivergence diagnosis. Over the 25-year career that followed, David has worked across homelessness, housing, education, prisons and the wider criminal justice system, combining frontline practice, rigorous research and strategic leadership to improve opportunities for people facing exclusion.

To have now returned home to Greater Manchester as CEO of such a wonderful charity as Back on Track – one that creates the space, skills, and support for people to see and achieve a better future – is a true privilege and a full-circle moment for him.
