Royal Eye Hospital plans submitted

A PLANNING application has been submitted to turn the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital into a centre for bio-medical research.

Documents placed with Manchester City Council detail a five-storey extension, the demolition of the building’s rear wings and the restoration of the Nelson Street facade.

The new buildings will accommodate research and development facilities, laboratories, offices, an education and training centre, shops and a cafe.

The 100,000 sq ft project comprises both new build and refurbishment work at the Grade II listed Victorian building.

The Manchester office of architectural practice Sheppard Robson, has been already been appointed by property group Bruntwood and Manchester Science Parks (MSP) to handle the £21m project.

The plans were submitted on December 23 and the council expects to have considered them at committee by the end of March.
