Viridor buys Swinnerton Environmental

WASTE management company Viridor has bought its second Greater Manchester business in a month after paying £1.8m for Bury-based waste management firm Swinnerton Environmental.
Viridor said that the acquisition was in line with its parent company, Pennon Group’s, stated strategy of expanding its waste management activities, particularly in the areas of recycling, waste treatment and disposal.
Swinnerton Environmental predominantly processes paper and plastics for recycling and has more than 60 years of experience in the industry. The firm currently employs 30 people and recycles around 30,000 tonnes of material a year. The business was owned by Gordon and Christopher Swinnerton, but will now be integrated into Viridor’s recycling facilities within the Manchester Greater Manchester area.
Mark Burrows-Smith, director of Viridor North, said: “In recent months Viridor has shown its commitment to becoming the leading recycler in the Greater Manchester region. The acquisition of Swinnerton Environmental, alongside the acquisition of Adapt Recycling in December will build upon our existing operations in the region, expanding our business in the key recycling areas.”
He added: “The ever-increasing levels of recycling and landfill diversion being demanded within the UK’s waste strategies mean that investment in key recycling operations is crucial.”
Gordon Swinnerton, managing director of Swinnerton Environmental Limited, said “I am delighted that Viridor have been able to secure the acquisition of Swinnerton’s. This is good news for employees, customers, suppliers and all other stakeholders in the business.”
