Gary Neville plans Salford restaurant

A PROPERTY development business owned by Manchester United footballer Gary Neville has applied to build a restaurant on the site of a rugby team’s former social club in Salford.

Signature Developments, the Bury-based company Mr Neville owns with his father Neville Neville, is seeking to demolish Folly Lane Social Club in Station Road, Swinton, and replace it with a 4,000 sq ft two-storey restaurant with room for 95 diners.

The social club is empty and has not been used for three years, but the proposals have angered local residents with more than 200 people signing a petition raising concerns over parking and congestion.

People are also worred about noise, litter and the potential for the restaurant to encourage rats. Nonetheless, planning officers have recommended councillors approve the plans when they are considered today.

In a report they said: “It is considered that on balance the proposed development would regenerate and improve the appearance of the site and subject to the recommended conditions, there would not be an unacceptable impact on the amenity of neighbouring residents.”

* The planning committee is also set to approve an application by Cheadle-based Ladson Construction to build a 3,500 sq ft retail unit with eight flats and 13 houses on the site of a former filling station in Manchester Road, Worsley.
