Peel changes approach at Ince Marshes

GVA has submitted a planning application on behalf of Peel Energy to Cheshire West & Chester Council for a proposed new wood-fired power plant at Ince Park.

GVA has advised Peel Group on the Ince Marshes for more than 5 years. Peel had already gained outline planning consent for recycling, environmental and waste and energy technologies to be built 58 hectares of land, as well as gaining permission for a bio-ethanol plant.

Its new application is to switch this to the 20MW wood-burning biomass plant, which could generate enough electricity for 37,000 homes if its application is approved. It would also produce steam and hot water that could be used by local businesses.

The wider development is due to start on site later this year and is now owned by Ince Park LLP – a joint venture between Peel Environmental and Covanta Energy.
Construction of the plant could start next year and take two years to complete.

As well as generating renewable electricity from wood that might otherwise end up in landfill, the plant would create around 17 full-time, permanent jobs.

GVA planning director, Stephen Bell, said: “We are delighted to maintain our involvement with the Peel Group of companies on this exciting and groundbreaking development.

“The biomass energy plant will sit readily within the wider Ince Park and further enhance the significant positive contribution this development will make to sustainable waste management and climate change objectives”.
