Economy leaves freelancers ‘uncertain’

THE weak state of the economy has left many freelancers feeling downbeat about their prospects in the coming year, according to a new survey.
Organisers of the Brookson Enterprise Freelance Fair, which organises speed dating-style networking events, polled around 40 freelancers. Half said they felt “uncertain” about the outlook for freelance work.
Some 7% said the climate was getting harder but 41% felt positive, saying the environment was improving – although this was a lower proportion than in a similar survey conducted in November.
Neil Lewis of the Brookson Enterprise Freelance Fair said: “The rise in uncertainty is the biggest change on our previous November survey, when confidence was building with 76% of freelancers stating that things were getting better.”
“Following the snow shut down in December and the slow start to 2011, there is little wonder that freelancers are feeling uncertain.”
The Brookson Enterprise Freelance Fair will take place from 4pm-9pm on Wednesday February 16 at the Innospace business incubator in Manchester. A second event will be held on March 16 at the Liverpool Innovation Park.
