Peel tackles energy plant opponents

THE PEEL Group has taken a protest group to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for claims it made about its proposed energy plant in Trafford.
The company wants to build a biomass plant on the Manchester Ship Canal close to the Trafford Centre in Barton. It says it would generate low carbon electricity for 37,000 homes and divert 140,000 tonnes of wood destined for landfill every year.
But the plan has drawn criticism from some local residents campaigning under the banner of the Breathe Clean Air Group (BCAG). They say the plant will have a negative impact on the health of the local community.
Peel said the group’s claims were “inaccurate and inflammatory” and referred it to the ASA.
Peel Energy’s project manager Jon England said: “We are pleased that the material has been withdrawn following our complaint as we considered it to be completely misleading. The protest group has agreed to withdraw its material following advice from the ASA rather than challenge our assertions at a full ASA Council hearing.”
Pete Kilvert, a spokesman for BCAG, was reluctant to discuss the action saying the ASA had asked both parties to keep the case confidential. He denied Peel’s assertion that the leaflets had been withdrawn following advice from the ASA.
