Stockport council publishes development plan

A NEW development plan has been drawn up for the regeneration of Stockport’s town centre.

The Development Prospectus, which has been produced alongside advisors Drivers Jonas Deloitte, identifies four distinct development areas around the town centre. They are:-

o A core retail centre including Merseyway, Bridgefield and Knightsbridge.
o A historic and cultural quarter around the Market and Underbanks area.
o An office-led business quarter around the train station and A6 corridor.
o A residential community around the Hopes Carr and Hillgate area.

Within these, the report highlights ten major opportunities for new investment.

Councillor Dave Goddard, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “We are in challenging times and this has focused our aspirations for Stockport town centre.

“We are taking action to ensure we are in the best possible position to maximise our advantages, like the great transport facilities and skilled and educated population.

“Our town centre is less than two hours from London, ten minutes from Manchester, fifteen minutes from the airport and bang on the motorway network.

“We have a gem of a location for national companies who want all the benefits of a big conurbation and also immediate connectivity to the rest of the UK.”
