£22m theatre contract up for grabs

A CONTRACT worth £22.6m for the redevelopment of Liverpool’s Everyman and Playhouse Theatres is up for grabs.
The move follows the approval last month of an £12.8m grant from the Arts Council which will underpin the £28m project.
Applicants will be responsible for the phased construction of a new Everyman Theatre at Hope Street and refurbishment of the Playhouse Theatre.
Construction of the new Everyman theatre is expected to begin in early 2011, with the facility due to open in 2013.
The new Everyman will be designed by award-winning theatre architect Steve Tompkins of Haworth Tompkins Architects, responsible for the redevelopment of London’s Royal Court and Young Vic theatres and recently appointed to lead the master planning for future development of the National Theatre.
The redevelopment of the Everyman – which has not been upgraded since the mid-70s – is the first phase of a combined plan for the two theatres.
The entire redevelopment project is scheduled to be completed in 2016
Having secured the Arts Council funding, The Liverpool and Merseyside Theatres Trust has applied for £6m from the European Regional Development Fund and £3m from the North West Development Agency.
