Consortium wins Shanghai bid

A CONSORTIUM led by a Liverpool company has been awarded the contract to design and build Liverpool’s Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
Design agency Uniform led a consortium including international exhibition and event specialists SYMA and architects BDP.
The consortium won the contract following a competitive tendering process which involved businesses from across the world.
The World Expo in Shanghai runs from May 1 to October 31 and is expected to attract around 70 million visitors. It is regarded as a major opportunity to forge new relationships in emerging markets and is expected to be worth £50m to Liverpool and the North West over the next decade.
Liverpool is the only UK city except London to have a dedicated Pavilion at the event. The venture is being led by Liverpool Vision, Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool-Shanghai Partnership and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).
Nick Howe, managing director of Uniform, said: “We are delighted to be playing such a crucial role in a project which will have significant long-term benefits for the city of Liverpool and the wider North West.
“Our consortium offers the right blend of skills and experience: international exhibition expertise, architectural and engineering know-how and, of course, the instinctive local cultural knowledge which Uniform brings to the job.”
BDP’s Mark Braund said: “We are very proud to be part of the consortium that has been given this incredibly prestigious commission and are looking forward helping to create a vibrant and engaging environment that will help showcase the city to a global audience.”
Liverpool’s Pavilion will address a number of themes during the Expo including urban regeneration, advanced technology and science, culture, health and sport and professional services.
