Knowsley Council awards £58m street lighting deal

KNOWSLEY  Metropolitan Borough Council has awarded a deal worth around £58m to replace street lighting across the borough to Tay Valley Lighting (TVL).

The work will involve the replacement of street lights across the borough and across sections of the M62 motorway to replace lights on 47 high masts. Some 80-% of the borough’s road signs will also be replaced or upgraded over the next four years.

The new lighting system being installed by TVL – a subsidiary of Scottish & Southern Energy – allows the council to very the levels of lighting on roads, which can help with energy efficiency. More intense lighting where needed could also help to cut down on crime and night time traffic accidents.

Mike Harden, Knowsley Council’s deputy chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be working with TVL and look forward to seeing the scheme achieve real benefits for our communities.”

“We hope that the new lighting will improve people’s feelings of safety, which in turn may stimulate the borough’s night-time economy.”
