Private company bosses more upbeat

THE bosses of private businesses are increasingly optimistic over their future prospects, a survey has said.

Research from accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers found a big majority, 80%,predict that, rather than decline, their business situation will improve or stay the same in the next year.

More than a third (41%) expect things to get better in the next year, with 66% believing the outlook will be better withing two years.

The results from the PwC Enterprising UK 2009 survey reveals that a fifth of firms surveyed expect life to get tougher in the next 12 months.

Alison Lever, North West partner and leader of entrepreneurial and private client teams at PwC said: “Private businesses continue to be challenged by slow or negative economic growth, reduced access to finance, a weak pound and increases in the cost of borrowing.

“Yet business owners remain defiantly upbeat with a resolute ‘hold our nerve and come through stronger’ spirit.

“Private business and its owners’ confidence is key to the economic recovery and it’s imperative that government and industry continue to back their commitment to the UK’s private business sector with stability in the tax regime and sustainable measures that encourage growth in the UK in the longer term.”
